As always, simple cookies get the cookie jar filled in short order and makes one a much-loved mother. And, if you sneak in some raisins and nuts, you can almost feel healthy.
Raisin-Cranberry Nut Cookies
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1 1/2 cups shortening
1/2 cup walnuts
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon orange extract
1 tablespoon of freshly grated orange zest
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup milk
Run the raisins, cranberries, and walnuts through the food processor briefly to coarsely chop them up a bit.
Place the shortening and sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat until well-combined and fluffy. Add the eggs, extracts, and zest. Beat well.
Mix together the dry ingredients. Add to the shortening/sugar combination along with the milk. Mix well. Chill the dough until easy to roll out and handle.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or use vegetable oil spray.
Divide the dough up into thirds or fourths for easy rolling. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to about 1/4-inch thick. With a large, round cookie cutter (or your choice of shape!) cut out the cookies and place them about one-inch apart on prepared baking sheets.
Bake for approximately 8-10 minutes until lightly golden brown. Place on wire racks to cool.
Orange Glaze
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Enough fresh orange juice to form a glaze
When the cookies are cooled, you can either brush on a coating of glaze or drizzle it over them.

Where does one draw the line . . .
When the monster storm, Sandy, was about to hit our shores, the president gave a speech and included something to the effect that we want to be prepared and leave no one unattended, forgotten, or behind. I couldn't help thinking back on the Benghazi Embassy burning where American citizens died because they were basically 'left behind' to fend for themselves. It is interesting to note that Benghazi, one of the places with great unrest, was the least protected of all our embassies in the world. It is sad to reflect that 'boots on the ground' were ready to roll and called off. It is sad to think that the two Marines that died trying to defend the place were turned down three times when they requested backup and help. According to many reports, the closest help was about 45 minutes away and the battle went on for over six hours. Then, to make things seem in order, the president actually stated that the two Marines were part of the security staff guarding the ambassador. This was not true. They happened to be there on other business and like all brave military, stepped into the fray to protect United States interests. It made them seem a bit inept as security when in fact they were heroes for all they tried to do without the help of our country at the moment they needed it.
It was very sad to see the presidential photo of the president and staff observing and discussing the progress of the storm. Where was this when our embassy and soldiers asked for and did not get help?
Both situations are awful and the storm's results are beyond our control. When we give and pray for the people suffering the effects and losses brought on by the power of nature, we need to remember the few, brave people who acted in our best interests in Benghazi and received no help when it was needed the most.

This is just the latest in the nasty campaign being orchestrated by the current administration. Anyone who has done any research would find that the song is very much untrue. In fact, if the 'children of our future' could realize it, the stimulus package already put them and the yet to be born into debt before they even come of working age.
The song is actually pretty funny because, in many ways, it sounds more like an anti-obama ad. How sad, however, that one party would stoop to such lows to try and diminish another's campaign with falsehoods.
The picture of a wrecked country and fighting on foreign soil is amusing because, over the last four years, our country has involved itself in the Middle East when we don't really belong there. And, when push comes to shove, events such as Benghazi, are covered up and the American people have to fight to find the truth.
This ad is a very sad commentary from people grasping at straws. I'd be ashamed to be a part of it.

Practicing for Thanksgiving!
After a long, hot summer it was nice to bake bread without dread! I wanted to make bread stuffing to go with chicken, cranberries, and gravy for dinner and didn't want to use store-bought bread. It gets too mushy and doesn't stand up to the sauted onions, celery, and spices.
I took a slightly different approach to the bread and added a cup of freshly ground whole wheat to the mix. It must have passed inspection because my husband said to make it this way for the Thanksgiving turkey stuffing.
My younger son is very careful about his calories and is health-conscious so I let him know earlier in the day that we were having a special dinner and he skimped on lunch in order to have two helpings at dinner.

The Truth About Benghazi?
It would be very sad to think that American citizens died because their own country was there to help them. There is so much cover up and mis-explanations, I wonder if the real truth will ever be known. In the meantime, families have lost loved ones supposedly in the protection of the United State Government.
Breaking news on Benghazi: the CIA spokesman, presumably at the direction of CIA director David Petraeus, has put out this statement: "No one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate. ”

So who in the government did tell “anybody” not to help those in need? Someone decided not to send in military assets to help those Agency operators. Would the secretary of defense make such a decision on his own? No. It would have been a presidential decision. There was presumably a rationale for such a decision. What was it? When and why—and based on whose counsel obtained in what meetings or conversations—did President Obama decide against sending in military assets to help the Americans in need?
Fresh Apple Cake
I used this recipe for cupcakes today but it would work for a sheet cake, too. I like that it can be mixed in one bowl and in the oven quickly. There is a little prep work for the apples but isn't that what teenage children are for??
Fresh Apple Cake . . . or Cupcakes
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
3 large eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon zest
3 heaping cups of peeled and diced apples
1 tablespoon brandy
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon brown sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Either line cupcake pans with papers or vegetable oil spray and line the bottom of a 11 x 13-inch (or there abouts!) with parchment paper.
Place all of the first group of ingredients in a mixing bowl. Mix until just combined. If the batter is too dry, add drops of milk until it reaches the proper consistency.
In another bowl, combine the second group of ingredients. Fold the apple mixture into the batter and put into your prepared pan(s).
Depending on the pan(s) used, baking for approximately 15-25 minutes or until golden and the top springs back when lightly pressed. Cool in a wire rack.
The cake goes well with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you want it simple, ice with a thin lemon glaze.

A Cupcake Morning!
Time to bake a cake for my friend's daughter. Since my friend has six children, I like to come up with something different each time. Given the various favorite flavors of the family, I hit on making a 'cupcake cake' with banana, apple, spice, and chocolate cupcakes. Since the birthday is the day before Halloween, I put in a little of the the holiday by way of the lavender icing which also happens to be the birthday girl's favorite color. It will save the mess of cutting the cake, too!

Our cat has made friends with our new dog, Griff, but only on a provisional basis - through the window! The cat is always joyful about seeing our dogs in the morning but the friendship is a 'protected' one with the cat on the inside of the window and the dogs on the outside of the window. The dogs like the cat but we aren't sure that the dogs wouldn't like her too much and end the cat's last chapter on earth!
This basis of friendship seems to suit all parties concerned. Sometimes, they get a chance to sniff through the screen door but more often, the cat will pounce against the window, the dogs will react and they will do it all over again.

Budget Candy Treats . . . from your own kitchen!
When my children were very small, we didn't always have the extra money for special treats. Fortunately, I liked to bake so something could always be managed and the children never really knew when we were struggling financially. A favorite was a simple candy recipe that only required melting, stirring something into it, and letting it harden.
Although you can use your choice of chocolate chips for this, I watched for the sales of the chocolate melts at the craft stores. Besides chocolate, it came in a variety of colors. It is easy to gently melt in the microwave and you can stir in just about anything to come up with a crunchy treat. You just add enough so it holds together when you drop tablespoons onto some waxed paper to harden.
Some ideas . . .

Chow Mein noodles (the dried, ready-to-eat variety)
Coconut.
Crisped rice cereal.

Who Invited the UN to invade our election process?
You never know what is going to happen next in the United States. The campaign trail has been littered with lies and deceit . . . from the incumbent's administration. The debates were one-sided as the current administration seemed to feel he could stand on his own record . . . whatever that might be. There was a massive cover up regarding the murder of our ambassador in Libya. The president has stated twice that planned parenthood provides mammograms . . . even after planned parenthood admitted publically that it did no such thing. Now, we find out that the UN will be overseeing our election day voting to make sure there are no disputes or that people are prevented from voting. Why can't American organizations take care of that even if there really is no problem. In fact, the one voting problem in the last four years was when the new black panthers harrassed voters, were cited, and then the attorney general dropped the clear cut case.
First of all, according to the news coverage, 44 UN officials will be monitoring polling places in the United States. Uh, I think we have a lot more than 44 polling places. And, what will they be doing? And what will they constitute as a problem that needs attention and why have people other than fellow Americans even be given that authority? I like the stand being taken in Texas - The UN comes in and they will be arrested.
Meanwhile, the violent threats against Mr. Romney continue via Twitter, etc. I have yet to hear the president come out and comdemn such 'intolerance'. Or, do you suppose tolerance is only something required when one side is winning and ignored if it concerns the challenging faction.

Democracy in Action? I Think Not . . .
When I grew up, I loved the idea of a country where the better candidate won an election based on merit, character, and knowledge. It doesn't seem to work that way anymore. The last four years haven't been great and it seems we need a change in office. Contrary to some belief, I don't think that giving the current president another four years will make anything better and, in fact, may change the United States in many ways that will adversely affect generations to come.
Yes, I think candidates should be open but they should all be open to scrutiny. To date, we have not been able to view many of the documents that the president has laid claim to as they have been sealed or concealed from public viewing. Interesting because he managed to have a court order remove a closure on a court document to see to another person's defeat several years ago and now is attempting to do the same to Romney.
It seems that if you can't run a campaign based on what you, the president, have accomplished, it is rather poor sportsmanship to attempt to ruin another's credibility because you have so little to offer. Naturally, our 'favorite' lawyer is there for the president because she likes nothing better than to demean and destroy another person's life. She has never been in a court room but is always in the news.
Since Mr. Romney has led a good life, I'm assuming that whatever they want to do to him will only make the bitter factions look petty and stupid. My main worry are the many people who don't research past the biased news reports and change their vote based on a whim and not a fact.
It is two weeks before the election and the possibility of a change for the good in our country. Prayers are needed because I don't believe the democrats put that sort of thing at the head of their list. Prayers are also needed for other Catholics who are bound and determined to vote the incumbent in for another four years. My pastor said that the moment the democratic convention announced they were campaigning on same-sex marriage and abortion, it would be sinful for a Catholic to vote for them. To me, voting for a candidate in any election who you know supports the death of the unborn at any stage of development would be against Church teachings.

to the market and seeing the piles of pumpkins tells you that Fall is officially
here and it is time for all things spicy and, well, pumpkin! Naturally, the best
way to ease into the season is with a batch of Pumpkin Cookies!
Spicy Pumpkin Cookies

Scoop out teaspoons of dough and place about 2 inches apart on prepared baking
sheets. Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes or until lightly brown and set.
Remove to cool on a rack.
A nice touch for the holidays would be an orange glaze. Just drizzle it over the
cookies when they are still a bit warm and let dry. Some colorful sprinkles in
keeping with the season wouldn't go amiss, either!

way to ease into the season is with a batch of Pumpkin Cookies!
Spicy Pumpkin Cookies
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed
2 large eggs

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Nothing but reality from my husband . . .
This morning, I got on the scale, as I do every morning, to bemoan the fact that the numbers never change appreciably. Imagine my two seconds of joy when it showed my weight had gone down fifty pounds . . . overnight! I went off about my morning routine of breakfast and reading. Thirty minutes later, my husband arrives on the scene and casually remarks, "The bathroom scale is broken." I quickly replied, "Oh, no, I don't think so." He looked at me and said, "The scale said I was fifty pounds less than when I went to bed last night." I encouragingly replied, "Well, I did fix a light dinner yesterday." Still, my husband insisted the scale was, indeed, out of order and we had to buy a new one.
I told one of my friends and she said that under no circumstances should I ever get rid of that scale! I was already thinking I should cut down on my exercise, including housework, as I couldn't risk losing another fifty pounds. My husband told me we were going shopping . . . for a new scale.
I told one of my daughters about the wonderful old scale that her father was insistent on replacing. She said we should keep it because it was obviously taking into account body mass and it seemed to her that we both could live perfectly well without that now-missing fifty pounds. My husband handed me my sweater and said to get into the car.
The new scale is now in place. It isn't even as pretty as the trusty scale it replaced. And, the moment I stepped on the new scale, I knew that the old scale's 'loss' was the new scale's 'gain' . . . as the fifty pounds was back in place.

The Confession Line - Suggestion or Reality?
Some of the most interesting times at church seem to happen at Saturday afternoon confession time. Just when you think people would be the most penitent, the more potential for sin present itself. Perhaps a firm purpose of amendment and humbleness occur after each person's visit to the confessional.
One Saturday, I arrived at church to find the place completely empty but noted that the confessional light was on and someone was already in there. I settled down in the pew and awaited my turn. I guess the church had been empty when the current penitent arrived because she was talking quite loudly. Her remarks were punctuated with loud bursts of laughter. I sat there trying hard to not hear her but she was awfully strident in her sinful pronouncements. I waited almost 15 or 20 minutes and in that time, more and more people showed up for confession. After awhile, it was almost funny to watch the expressions on people's faces as they were 'treated' to this woman's exceedingly loud confession. Eventually, she exited the confessional and the look on her face was priceless as she had not realized the formerly empty church now housed about 20 people. She didn't stay to pray but with red face hurriedly left, humbleness applied. It was a reminder to other people as not a voice could be heard in the remainder of confessions.
Another time, we are patiently waiting in line for our turn when a garishly dressed woman comes down the aisle. She is sporting a picture hat complete with artificial flowers and a flowing, summer dress. She stops, looks at all of us there in line, looks at the closed confessional door, and then yanks open the door to confirm that there is, indeed, someone in there ahead of here. She stands looking in for a minute or two and then slams it shut and stands guard in front daring any of us to claim our rightful place in line. No one did!
My favorite was the mother/daughter duo that came into the church one Saturday. The mother, with a firm grasp on her daughter's arm, marched past the line and went right in the confessional with her daughter and slammed the door behind them. A few minutes later, the mother comes out and stands outside the door waiting. Eventually, the daughter leaves and the mother grabs her arm and they leave the church.
Since our current pastor came to our church, he made a much-needed change in Saturday confession. Up until his arrival, there was no discernible line for confession. People basically came in and sat near the area of the confessional and sort of kept track of who was there first. Naturally, many times, people didn't get their turn in order and words were often exchanged. The current pastor finally instructed everyone to get in line along the wall in the front of the confessional. Relief! You arrived at church and you knew your place! We still have a problem as people come in during this time and walk to the front pew in front of the confessional and then are very perturbed when someone in the line goes in ahead of them. Yesterday, a man did just that while the rest of us got into the line. After about four people went in before him, he looked around and said, "Oh, I didn't realize there was a line for this." Uh, you had to wonder what he thought we were all standing along the wall for if he didn't recognize it as a line!

Chick's New Friend . . .
A seemingly lost dog has taken up residence with us this week. We found the half-grown pup in our front yard and he took a real liking to my son. No tags, no collar, and no inclination to leave so we introduced him to our dog. Our dog was thrilled to have someone to tear around the yard with and didn't mind sharing her dinner bowl, either. My children named the newcoming, Griff. Griff is the one on the left.
Tomorrow, we take Griff to the vet for a check up, shots, etc. and a license. First of all, however, we plan to ask the vet to check and make sure Griff doesn't have a 'chip' as we certainly don't want to deprive someone of a beloved pet.

Romney/obama debate - Some Fact Checking . . .
As in all debates, a lot is stated in hopes of turning the voter tide towards one party or the other. Before one renders their vote, based on what is heard at these debates, it is a good idea to 'fact check' some of the statements. Here are a few 'facts' from the recent debate that don't pan out under closer scrutiny.
Falsehood: President Obama stated, "[T]here are millions of women all across the country who rely on Planned Parenthood for…mammograms."
Fact: President Obama is attempting to resurrect and advance the myth that Planned Parenthood provides mammograms, an argument that was thoroughly discredited after deceitfully proffered by Planned Parenthood’s President Cecile Richards in 2011 Not one of Planned Parenthood’s approximately 800 clinics nationwide provides mammograms; moreover, as the Department of Health and Human Services documented in June 2012, Planned Parenthood is not even authorized to perform mammograms, and — if a clinic did — it would be violating federal law. Under the federal Mammogram Quality Standards Act, administered by HHS, "[n]o facility may conduct an examination or procedure…involving mammography" without a certification from the US. Food and Drug Administration.
Falsehood: President Obama stated that, under Obamacare, "if you like your healthcare plan, you will be able to keep your healthcare plan. Period. No one will take it away, no matter what."
Fact: Obamacare eliminates life-affirming choices from the health insurance market. In 2010, President Obama and his allies in Congress passed the most expansive healthcare bill in the history of the U.S. The Obama Administration’s implementation of that "healthcare reform" law now forces many women (and men) to purchase insurance that covers abortions and life-ending drugs and devices regardless of their deeply held — and constitutionally protected — conscientious beliefs. Forcing Americans to pay for an agenda is not choice. Punishing them with onerous fines if they do not submit is not freedom. Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against Obamacare’s anti-life mandates that violate federal law and American's First Amendment Freedom of Conscience. Real healthcare respects life and the foundational American principle of freedom of conscience.

Fact: President Obama’s comments, that women somehow need "contraception" (and need it to be paid for by others) in order to succeed, are not only offensive, but untrue. He is including some life-ending drugs in his definition of contraception. The true empowerment of women is not dependent on the ability to end pregnancy. As Governor Romney noted: "What we can do to help young women and women of all ages is to have a strong economy, so strong that employers that are looking to find good employees…and adapting to a flexible work schedule that gives women opportunities that they would otherwise not be able to afford."
Falsehood: The highly profitable abortion industry and its titular leader, Planned Parenthood, require taxpayer support.
Fact: Planned Parenthood receives over $1.3 million each day from the American taxpayer, a grand total of over $487 million a year — and this continues as our country is facing a $16 trillion debt. We know that 7 out of 10 Americans — self-described as "pro-life" and "pro-choice" — do not want their tax dollars being used for abortion. And yet President Obama was willing to shut down the federal government rather than see any cut in federal subsidies to the nation’s largest abortion provider.

My helper?
Having a kitten in the house is like dealing with a two year old! It is getting so that I have to wait until she goes down for a nap before I can get some things done. She is fascinated by the sewing machine and her favorite place to reside is right behind the action. And, if I'm not at the sewing machine, she goes where I go . . . which is in front of the keyboard of the computer . . . where she is right this minute!
Treat Reminder! Rice Cereal treats!
The holiday season approaches in a rather rapid pace and our thoughts turn towards the kitchen and how to plan for parties and special meals. One easy treat that is often forgotten are the rice cereal treats which I know most all of us grew up. I won't bother with the recipe (unless someone can't find it!) as it appears on most every rice cereal box. My thought is to give hints on how to dress this simple treat up for fun treats in line with the joy of the season!
*Melt some chocolate chips carefully to avoid burning and then drizzle it over prepared and cut rice cereal bars. Before the chocolate can set, sprinkle with colorful decorations which can be found in the baking section at most grocery stores.
*If you can find peanut butter chips, melt them and spread over the tops of cut treats and quickly press into some finely chopped peanuts.
*When you prepare the treats, add 1/2 cup finely chopped dried fruit to the mixture before you press it into the pan to cool.
*Try drizzling with melted white chocolate chips and scattering toffee bits over them before they set.
*For some extra crunch, give some dried banana chips a whirl in the blender to break up a bit and add to the rice cereal mixture before pressing into the pan to cool. Go for a banana split taste and drizzle with melted chocolate.
*Add a tablespoon or two of freshly grated orange zest to the mixture before pressing into the pan to cool.

There is nothing more heartbreaking than people disrespecting others because they want babies to all get a chance to live and prosper. With the constant erosion of moral values, it seems that even more horrible events occur in the same of protecting women's rights, reproductive freedom, and choice. I just read this article and just when you think it has all been lowered as far as it will go, the anti-life people dig in even deeper.

The Worth of a Debate . . .
When Joe Biden debated Paul Ryan, it was a very uncomfortable procedure because Mr. Biden made it that way. Because of the lack of real context from Biden, people started keeping count of how many times he interrupted Paul Ryan and how many times he flashed the "Joker" grin. It exceeded 50 in each category. The moderator wasn't much help as she was definitely on the liberal side and happy to do anything to push the points to Biden's credit column.
Last night, obama took another turn at debating and while he is a good 'presenter', his facts and tired agendas were the same as always. Again, the moderator was blatantly on the liberal side and did all she could to help obama to the detriment of Mr. Romney. Being a good 'presenter' isn't enough. We met a gentleman who made a living being a Lincoln presenter. He looked like Lincoln, knew how to come across as Lincoln, presented himself as Lincoln . . . but wasn't Lincoln. The incumbent president was good at presenting himself as a viable candidate but deeper reflection would show thinking people that he was not.
It is sad to see the democratic system come down to basing a campaign on lies and then trying to foist lies as coming forth from the opposing candidate. Again, I didn't watch the whole debate. Before it even started, it was evident it was being staged around the president so he would come across in a better light than the last debate. We got the same old agendas that haven't worked the last four years. We got the same statistics that are composed from any math known to man. We just heard from someone who wasn't in it for change that will benefit the country as a whole.
I think that given the biased moderator and the set up of questions from the audience, Mr. Romney came out ahead as someone with new, workable ideas, the best interests of the country at heart, and as a gentleman.
Last night, obama took another turn at debating and while he is a good 'presenter', his facts and tired agendas were the same as always. Again, the moderator was blatantly on the liberal side and did all she could to help obama to the detriment of Mr. Romney. Being a good 'presenter' isn't enough. We met a gentleman who made a living being a Lincoln presenter. He looked like Lincoln, knew how to come across as Lincoln, presented himself as Lincoln . . . but wasn't Lincoln. The incumbent president was good at presenting himself as a viable candidate but deeper reflection would show thinking people that he was not.
It is sad to see the democratic system come down to basing a campaign on lies and then trying to foist lies as coming forth from the opposing candidate. Again, I didn't watch the whole debate. Before it even started, it was evident it was being staged around the president so he would come across in a better light than the last debate. Back to the sewing machine . . .
I always plan to start a quilt using new lengths of fabric and going by a set pattern. It seems that isn't to be as I tend to go with a crazy quilt and devise my own way of making a quilt. Here are view of my latest. When I started it, I wasn't quite sure of the colors but once it was sewn together, I really liked the way it blended and used up so many scraps that have been loading up my quilt scrap collection box. One thing in my favor, no one is likely to copy my creations. The are one of a kind straight from my abstract mind!
Getting to know you . . .
Well, we finally resolved our 'summer of the cats' and no longer have a multitude of strays residing on our front porch. As I've posted, they either wandered off to find homes of their own or we were blessed to find homes for them. We were down to one dog and one cat and were very happy with the situation.
Then . . . my son was out mowing the front lawn. A half-starved dog started following him as he went up and down the grass. Whenever you son would turn around, the dog would leap and turn mid air, back off, and then proceed to follow him again. After he finished his lawn work, the dog was still there, smiling, wagging his tail, and begging for attention. My son gave him a handful of dog food which he gobbled up along with a long drink of fresh water. He had more love than hunger as the dog would stop eating whenever another of us came out and would smile his doggy smile and come over for a pat on the head.
We decided to either find a home for him or keep him. We had been dithering about whether or not to get our own dog a friend and it seems the matter has been taken out of our hands. The dogs bonded and have worn each other out with playing.
Although we are still not sure about keeping the young dog, we are getting him his shots and other medical needs up to date. The children named him Griff. He is darker brown than our dog and has blue eyes. He quickly learned that our dog is boss so all is friendly and happy on the canine front.

The Mandate against Catholic still stands . . .
Yesterday, Paul Ryan challenged the vice president on the administration's mandate against religious freedoms in the United States. Biden, who claims to be Catholic, made a "that is a fact" statement about the HHS mandate during the debate. . . and the American Bishops stepped into the fray and refuted his public but erroneous proclamation in front of the country.
Response from the bishops:
This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain “religious employers.“ That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to ”Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,” or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served.
HHS has proposed an additional “accommodation” for religious organizations like these, which HHS itself describes as “non-exempt.“ That proposal does not even potentially relieve these organizations from the obligation ”to pay for contraception“ and ”to be a vehicle to get contraception.” They will have to serve as a vehicle, because they will still be forced to provide their employees with health coverage, and that coverage will still have to include sterilization, contraception, and abortifacients. They will have to pay for these things, because the premiums that the organizations (and their employees) are required to pay will still be applied, along with other funds, to cover the cost of these drugs and surgeries.

The Fact Checkers Always Find You Out . . .
Last night's debate between the current vice president and Paul Ryan was anything but comfortable to watch. It wasn't Paul Ryan performance in the debate. He was excellent. It was the antics, grins, and constant interruptions of the vice president when it was Paul Ryan's turn to speak. The moderator, too, was obviously not keeping a middle ground as she stopped Paul Ryan in mid sentence more than once to change the subject just when he was making his point.
What was amazing to me was the vice president's defense of the recent upheaval in Libya that resulted in the death of four Americans including the ambassador. The facts are out regarding the plea from the embassy to provide more security yet the vice president glossed over that and said that Paul Ryan was one who voted down increased spending for all embassy security in the world. Seems to me there is a vast difference between embassies in, say, France and one in Libya where there is constant unrest. Let's just say the embassy in France had more protection than the one in Libya. And you can't argue the results of that lack of security at this point.
Interesting that the vice president would counter Mr. Ryan's assertion that the current administration is taking away the rights of Catholics with it's mandates. The vice president flashed his annoying smirk and denied it to which Paul Ryan immediately countered with, "Then why is the Catholic Church suing you?"
Both debaters are Catholics although the vice president treats his faith more with a little 'c' for Catholic. He obviously puts is politics and political party ahead of his religion.
I had to take breaks from watching this debate unfold. It was so frustrating to not have a straight discussion with a moderator who was fair to both sides. I don't look forward to daily Mass and being approached for argument by Catholic Democrats (which, to me, is a contradiction in terms). It is always amazing how Catholic Democrats defend their politicians with, 'you can't judge their heart'. No, you can't but when they put it right out there that they stand with their party and the party platform is against all that is Catholic, you can assume the worst.
The liberal press refers to the vice president as the 'happy warrior' for the middle class. I'm still of the mind that if we need some R&R (Romney/Ryan) come November.

Tolerance is only for the entitled and liberal . . .
Last week, a conservative radio talk show host said that there would probable be some 'unrest' if the election was close and Romney won. Today, the tweets, etc., are more threatening and, from the context of the statements, may people are threatening to riot and riot big if Romney is elected because they know he will take away their food stamps. Should we wait for the president to step up to the plate and urge peace and tranquility and abide by our Democratic system? Afraid that is probably not going to happen given his previous stands which never includes Christian values or conservatives.
According to a news report, people praying outside the White House were arrested. They were peaceful and . . . praying! Our ambassador is killed overseas, and the administration bends over backwards to not directly include the real factions that carried out this murder. The Catholics want their amendment rights upheld and the president is forcing us to pay into the abortion and contraception system even though it goes against our moral structure and the precepts of our Faith.
Now, the liberal voters threaten to hurt and destroy any and everything that gets in their way if the election doesn't go their way. What would they think if the conservatives had started riots in 2008? But, we didn't because that's the way the votes went for the election. Why don't Republicans/Conservatives deserve the same consideration?
Election years used to be exciting times as we listened to all the points raised and defended on both sides. Arguments were raised but not usually with the animosity exhibited this last year. Opposition parties pushed the envelope but, basically, kept to stretching the truth about each other and didn't engage in outright untruths. The media, in years long gone by now, would happily report all these goings on in the interest of giving the public information. These days, I've stopped listening to all the usual network news channels because I get so sick and tired of them either omitting important facts, distorting the events, or disrespecting the side they dislike with unfounded 'facts'. I always thought good journalism and reporting was to present the facts letting the public decide. These days, they present the facts as they see them and make disparaging remarks about people who don't fall in line with them.
Was a time when the news system protected the people from the government. Now, to all intents and purposes, the majority of them seem to have been 'bought' by the politicians. At least, that's the way they report it!
So, who is going to be a man and stand up to this threat of rioting if the vote doesn't go their way? The president? Probably not as he will be pleased that he has a following no matter how vindictive, uninformed, and mean. The media? Definitely not as news is news and they will have a great day reporting any possible death and destruction and extolling the virtues of the entitled who are fighting to lay claim to what they want as their own. And we all know that the riots are just a cover up for rioters to plunder private homes and businesses. If you stopped most of them and asked why the riot, they probably wouldn't know because they just see a chance to steal without immediate retribution from the law.
What a wonderful example this would present to the world as the greatest nation on earth resorts to violence, as do so many third world countries, when people don't get what they want, when they want, and how they want it. Don't they realize that the more they destroy, the less they will have? Businesses and work promote prosperity. Food stamps, excessive welfare, and entitlement promotions end up in disaster if they feel they are losing a single penny of 'free' money.
Tolerance? It is not for the people who exercise their right to vote the way they want to in the election.

Just my view on the subject . . .
Elections are coming up and everyone is busy making their personal decisions for whom to vote. This is the American Way. You vote your conscience. If, however, all Catholics are voting their conscience, according to our Faith, why is it that we have had a pro-death president in the White House? Something isn’t right here.
When I question people about their stand on the pro-life movement, they are all for the sanctity of life . . . until they step into the voting booth. What happens to their conscience when they start to mark their ballots? What happens to saving the unborn when they put their mind to the vote at hand? And one vote does make a difference as the Catholic vote put our current president in the White House. Isn’t that sad to think about? Our faith, religion and morals should dictate caring for the unborn, no matter what. People will put their life on the line to show this yet they can’t cross party lines. Of course, everyone has a right to belong to the political party of their choice but have they taken the time over the years to find out what the party of their choice really stands for these days? I don’t think there is any pride to be found in bragging that you have never voted outside your particular political party. It shows a lack of thinking not the virtue of loyalty. There is such a thing as misplaced loyalty and it certainly isn’t anything of which to be proud.
How many parishes advocate pro-life yet the majority of their congregation votes the ticket that puts the very lives of the innocent on the line? Someone once told me that when I reach the Social Security years, I will change my political views dramatically when it comes to my monthly Social Security and related benefits. What a reality check! A living person is worried about a change in dollars and cents when they already have a full life. They vote for added comfort while unborn babies can be murdered brutally and legally even if they would be viable outside the mother’s womb. Perhaps the Social Security Catholics should worry about euthanasia as abortion is surely the precursor to that. If the life of a baby is so unimportant, how much more value would an elderly person have in this day and age?
A friend told me that her family votes for any candidate with a D following his or her name. The Democratic party hasn’t been very kind to the unborn for years. The current administration made sure that partial birth abortion remained a tragic option..
When I was in school, any time I saw a D following anything on my report card, I knew I was borderline for failure. Many of the candidates sporting that D are helping us head for moral bankruptcy with other political parties following closely in their footsteps. If we are serious in our concern for the unborn, then vote to safeguard the unborn. Wrongs never make rights and too many Catholic votes have deliberately taken away the rights of the unborn.
I like the way the priests and brothers at St. Michael’s Prep School say the Pledge of Allegiance, "with liberty and justice for all, both born and unborn." We say we are pro-life. Will the Catholic vote reflect this or will our vote show us to be selfish hypocrites again this election?

Banana Drama Cookies
I love drop cookies as they go together quickly and are almost always
tasty,
moist little cakes of goodness. Save an overly-ripe banana by way of a cookie
ingredient and you have a win/win situation.
Banana Drama Cookies
1 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cups solid shortening
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup very ripe banana - well mashed
1 tablespoon freshly-grated lemon zest
1 cup chocolate chips - semisweet or milk chocolate, melted
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Pinch salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Preheat oven to 350 Degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or used
vegetable oil spray.
Combine the sugar and shortening and beat until light and fluffy. Beat in the
eggs and extracts. Add bananas and melted chocolate.
Combine the dry ingredients and stir into egg/shortening mixture.
Use a cookie scoop or drop by rounded teaspoonsfuls about 1 1//2 inches apart on
prepared baking sheets. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove to cool completely on wire
racks.
Icing
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Enough milk or cream to form a usable icing.
Topping ideas

1 cup chocolate chips - semisweet or milk chocolate, melted
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Pinch salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Preheat oven to 350 Degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or used
vegetable oil spray.
Combine the sugar and shortening and beat until light and fluffy. Beat in the
eggs and extracts. Add bananas and melted chocolate.
Combine the dry ingredients and stir into egg/shortening mixture.
Use a cookie scoop or drop by rounded teaspoonsfuls about 1 1//2 inches apart on
prepared baking sheets. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove to cool completely on wire
racks.
Icing
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Enough milk or cream to form a usable icing.

You can't beat fresh beets!
We enjoy beets but canned ones always seem to miss the mark in taste and texture. When I found fresh ones on sale, last week, I knew they were destined to appear on our dinner table!
Beets have to be the easiest vegetable to prepare. You crop the green leaves off the top, wash the beets, and put them in a pot of water and simmer them for about 30-45 minutes depending on how big they are. You want them just fork tender not mushy.
You drain the pot and, one at a time, place a beet under running, cold water and just rub the skin off. As you can see from the lower picture on the right, it just shred off easily and you are left with a pretty, red globe of beet!
Last night, we had hot beets served with a bit of melted butter, salt, and pepper. We had some leftover, so they got sliced thinner, today, and marinated in ground caraway, salt, pepper, a bit of dry mustard, brown sugar, and cider vinegar.
A friend also shared another way to enjoy beets - raw! If you have a good blender that can practically puree rocks, this is an easy one. Just peel the raw beet with a potato peeler and cut into chunks. Add a cored, sliced, but unpeeled red apple, a raw, peeled carrot, and a few frozen or fresh strawberries. Put into the blender and blend the vegetables/fruit until it is thick and smooth. You can add a bit of water or orange juice to help it along. Add some ice, smooth out, again, and serve.
There are a lot of health benefits to this interesting smoothie but don't over due it as there is a nutrient in it that can make calcium unable to be absorbed. This is a once a week treat. Better yet, do what I do when presented with a great idea . . . Google beet juice and read the pros and cons!

Cat Summer!
As I've shared with you here on my blog, it has certainly been a summer of cats. One of the first to show up was this ancient tom cat my daughter called Humperdink and the name seemed to fit. He was a friendly cat who adored a good ear scratch and purr. The only trouble was that old age had not been kind to him and he had allergies and intestinal gas that could clear the neighborhood. He didn't want much more than a bowl of water, a snack, and a warm place in the sun to sleep the day away. He would often show up with a runny nose and leaves stuck to it. He would disappear for a week or so and show up - sometimes looking/feeling better and other times being an aging cat.
A month or so ago, he showed up in really bad condition. His age had caught up with him, big time, and we made arrangements to have him taken to a shelter. We didn't want to do it but he was suffering. He still managed to purr when we gave him attention but didn't bother with eating or drinking. The appointed Saturday came and we waited for the old fellow to show up and take him on a last ride. No Humperdink! After lunch, still no orange cat. By evening, we were pretty sure the friendly, orange cat had gone to his reward. We never saw him again but I was glad I had taken so many pictures of him and that we had given him some food, attention, and happiness.
