Starting tomorrow, sunny California isn't so bright . . .

Our government officials are scheming again. It was just reported that California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that would allow your child to get the Gardasil and/or Hepatitis B injection without parental knowledge or permission. In addition, any new vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases that come into play in the future will be under this law as well. Bad enough? It gets worse. If a child suffers any side effects or disabilities from these vaccines that didn’t get administered with parental knowledge/permission, the family still has to foot the subsequent bills and the law protects the companies that manufacture the vaccines from any liability. This awful bill that blatantly goes against our rights as citizens and people goes into effect tomorrow, October 11, 2011.

According to an article on this shocking revelation:

"This law was sponsored by political lackeys in the pocket of Merck who are either on the take (legislator Toni Atkins who lied about the money she received) or own a significant stake in the company (CA assemblywoman Sally Leiber who was forced to remove her name on the bill when her conflict of interest was revealed)."

I imagine the next step will be to limit or abolish home schooling so these people with warped agendas don’t let anyone escape their political webs. The State of Texas didn’t let Perry get away with his proclamation regarding mandatory Gardasil injections. I hope the citizens of the State of California evidence the same gumption.

With all the problems in the world today, why do these people narrow their scope on our innocent children?

Summer is ending in the garden . . .

Even though the higher temperatures are still with us, the garden tells the real story of the seasons even in California. The tomatoes are still appearing on the plants but more slowly now. The red of the fruit is a contrast to the drying leaves and stems of the plants.

Since California is known for its citrus, we do have a renewal of sorts going on as the oranges are slowly turning golden and the lemons are beginning to ripen.

We have a few chili pepper plants and the long, crimson fruit is drying on the plant which is what we want as we can let the sun preserve them for us and we just have to bag them and use them over the next few months.

The Bake Sale . . .

This is a favorite story of mine. It also encourages us to only claim that which we, ourselves, have made or the cake might come back to bite us!

The Bake Sale

Alice was to bake a cake for the church ladies' group bake sale, but she forgot to do it until the last minute. She baked an angel food cake and when she took it from the oven, the center had dropped flat. She said, "Oh dear, there's no time to bake another cake." So, she looked around the house for something to build up the center of the cake.

Alice found it in the bathroom -- a roll of toilet paper. She plunked it in and covered it with icing. The finished product looked beautiful, so she rushed it to the church.

Alice then gave her daughter some money and instructions to be at the sale the minute it opened and to buy that cake and bring it home. When the daughter arrived at the sale, the attractive cake had already been sold. Alice was beside herself.

A couple of days later, Alice was invited to a friend's home where two tables of bridge were to be played that afternoon. After the game a fancy lunch was served, and to top it off, the cake in question was presented for dessert.

Alice saw the cake, she started to get out of her chair to rush into the kitchen to tell her hostess all about it, but before she could get to her feet, one of the other ladies said, "What a beautiful cake!"

Alice sat back in her chair when she heard the hostess (a prominent church member) say . "Thank you; I baked it myself."

Wise Words from Judge Roy Moore of Alabama . . .

The following is a poem written by Judge Roy Moore from Alabama. Judge Moore was sued by the ACLU for displaying the Ten Commandments in his courtroom foyer. He has been stripped of his judgeship and now they are trying to strip his right to practice law in Alabama.

America the Beautiful,
or so you used to be.
Land of the Pilgrims' pride;
I'm glad they'll never see.

Babies piled in dumpsters,
Abortion on demand,
Oh, sweet land of liberty;
your house is on the sand.

Our children wander aimlessly
poisoned by cocaine,
Choosing to indulge their lusts,
when God has said abstain.

From sea to shining sea,
our Nation turns away
From the teaching of God's love
and a need to always pray.

We've kept God in our temples,
how callous we have grown.
When earth is but His footstool,
and Heaven is His throne.

We've voted in a government
that's rotting at the core,
Appointing Godless Judges
who throw reason out the door,

Too soft to place a killer
in a well deserved tomb,
But brave enough to kill a baby
before he leaves the womb.

You think that God's not angry,
that our land's a moral slum?
How much longer will He wait
before His judgment comes?

How are we to face our God,
from Whom we cannot hide?
What then is left for us to do,
but stem this evil tide?

If we who are His children,
will humbly turn and pray;
Seek His holy face
and mend our evil way:

Then God will hear from Heaven
and forgive us of our sins,
He'll heal our sickly land
and those who live within.

But, America the Beautiful,
if you don't - then you will see,
A sad but Holy God
withdraw His hand from Thee.

Grown-up Cookies!

Here are some cookies that will nicely grace your cookie plate and appeal to the more grown-up tastes in your household. I have to admit, however, that having coffee in them never stopped my children from eating them, too!

First Smile of the Day . . .

Why did the Pope cross the road? (He crosses everything!)

Just pointing this out . . .

I've gotten so tired, over the almost last four years, of hearing everything being blamed on former President Bush. The following list are some of the things that we can ' blame' him for and, personally, I'm happy to give him credit for the blame.

Anyone can cook and bake . . .eventually!

Yes, I can produce a perfect plate of cookies. Arriving home late with thirty minutes to spare, I can put together a complete meal for my family. These days, there are few recipes that can defeat me. It hasn’t always been that way.

Although I arrived at the married state knowing my way around a kitchen, it was a basic knowledge. Being a retired art major, sometimes my creative ideas far exceeded my basic culinary knowledge.

One of my first, memorable attempts at German cuisine was potato dumplings. My mother had always made them so a quick call to her and some back up research in a cookbook convinced me these would be a cinch and a meal-time triumph. I carefully prepared the dumplings. I gently slipped them into the simmering water, slapped down the lid, and turned up the heat. The lid rattled from the boiling water. Ten minutes later, I opened the lid to show off to my new husband and discovered a pot of cloudy water and no dumplings! I cried! You never boil dumplings and I found out the hard way.

I volunteered to bring a cake to work. A cake that was always a success, I had no qualms about doubling the recipe. It looked good and smelled great - all orange and cinnamon. The first cut into it at the office party revealed a soggy center. Before I could react, they all exclaimed over the clever custard filling. It was still humbling in my heart!

I had never made a fresh cherry pie but how hard could that be? I pitted the newly picked fruit and eventually pulled a beautiful pie from the oven. You never use sweet cherries for baked pies and this was accentuated by the fact that I had forgotten the sugar for these sour cherries.

After years of family cooking and baking, my mistakes are fewer and further between . . . or, at least, I’m better at rescuing potential disasters. My daughter is slowly taking over in the kitchen and making her own mistakes. We laugh together about them and forge ahead. I tell her I understand because I used to make errors, too. After all, when you burn the beans, you just call them refried and there is absolutely no truth in the rumor that I burned the fried chicken just last week! It was supposed to be extra brown and crispy!
