A Winter Quote!

Time is like a snowflake--it melts away while we try to decide what to do with it.

My favorite fudge recipes . . . so far!

Just checked out the fudge link I posted and narrowed down my immediate choices to two of them: Peppermint Chocolate Fudge and Candy Cane Fudge which uses vanilla baking chips. I will have to come to a decision as I don't want to overdose on pepperment. As my husband says, "Anything that calls for crushed candy canes in the recipe can't be all bad!"  His favorite brownie recipe includes crushed peppermint candy.

When I make basic chocolate fudge, I have yet to find one as good as the recipe called Crazy Mamie's Chocolate Fudge. It isn't difficult, does take a little time, but it well worth the effort.

Anyway, got my recipes copied off and will add them to my folder. If and when I make either or all of them, I'll share the pictorial results.

Great Fudge Recipes to Try!

Allrecipes always has an abundance of choices when you want a recipe. Their collection of fudge recipes is no exception. I usually treat myself to a day of candy making for Christmas and will be studying this link carefully. Thought I'd share!

Something very wrong with this . . .

It seems that insider trading on the stock market is not illegal for our Senate and Congressional representatives and their staffs. Remember Martha Stewart doing time for just the same thing and everyone shaking their head over how could she take advantage like that? Seems that just before that last 'crash', Congress and Senate were informed and ten of them went out and bought and sold like crazy on the stock market. Kerry, who is already a billionaire, made another couple million with inside trader information while so many small stock holders lost life savings. Google it and see for yourself! I'm shocked at how these people take advantage of their elected position with little regard for the people who believed their election lies and voted for them. This appeared on the 60 Minutes show and there is a book called "Throw Them All Out". There is supposed to be something in the works to make this insider trading illegal for everyone but considering who would have to make and vote on the changes, there will probably still be a loophole available to the people who misuse their power in government.

Another interesting note . . . seems our current people in power have decided that children cannot work on farms if the work deals with farm equipment or animals. The 'powers that be' feel it is too dangerous. Seems like our government wants us to raise a bunch of city children who don't know what it is like to do hard work and take care in doing it.

And since when does some person in a Washington office know better than we, parents, how to raise our children? If they spent more time in rectifying all their past mistakes in governing this nation, they should be too busy to tell us we can't have fries and should bring carrot sticks to school parties.

Yet another great point to ponder . . .

Every temptation is an opportunity to triumph over evil.

Sticky Cinnamon rolls in the immediate future . . .?

Home from Mass and thinking positive thoughts about making some sticky bun cinnamon roll type of treat for the family today. I looked at several recipes and decided to go with my usual way of mixing flour, yeast, water, sugar, butter, and milk. The difference is that I will put a thick glaze in the bottom of the pan so when I turn the pan of baked rolls over, the gooey goodness pours over the cinnamon rolls. This is a project in the planning stage so will let you know.

This morning, the recessional hymn was "Soon and Very Soon" which sounded like the title of a Gospel Spiritual to me. The tempo of the sung version by the choir was not Gospel so I looked it up when I got home. http://youtu.be/lmGiu9JfbIs Big difference but I don't think Father will allow quite the exuberance required for a good rendition of the spiritual. I have, however, found a composer that I wouldn't mind having a CD of his music. It wasn't, to my thinking, appropriate to the Mass but it is a catchy song.

Very cold today but with bright sunshine. If you stand in the sun, you won't freeze too much.

My husband just saw a stray cat in our yard and chastised the dog for not chasing it away. The dog, sleeping in her bed inside the door, was confused as she wasn't even outside and what cat? Our last two dogs did not like cats at all. I'm not sure how Chick would respond but I'm not taking any chances in case the cat has already used up eight of her nine lives.

My day of rest . . .?

No cookie baking today. Except for several specialized recipes that are done just before we gift people with cookies, I'm done . . . sort of! Of the 22 varieties I've made, my son still maintains the Sour Cream Twists are the best. He admits I didn't wasted my time baking the other ones but if I had made 22 batches of the Sour Cream Twists, he would have been happy. Uh, I noticed he happily consumed every new cookie that emerged from the oven.

We are heading off to Mass in the next 20 minutes. I'm hoping the sermon makes a bit more sense today as I am still trying to figure out one of the weekday ones. Father gave a very short sermon, basically repeating the same thing three times - that the people who attend daily Mass are the ones chasing away Catholics by the thousands. Oh, so that is why we only have about 40 at Mass every morning! Since we are a socialable, friendly bunch, we are totally confused about what he said. He is young, however, so a bit more priestly service might calm down what was obviously a worry to him.

Perhaps, Father meant that we are not more welcoming as I've experienced that to a great degree at a former parish. I can see where we need to respect and enact the basic rule of Christian Hospitality but his sermon sure didn't develop the subject any further than we were the inhospital problem of the day.

Cold temperatures and a brisk wind kept me from my pre-Mass walk, yesterday. I braved the morning stroll for one round and then hurried into church early to warm up. No exercise but some extra prayers. How many calories do prayers burn or do you 'burn' if you don't pray? :-)

A meditative thought for a Sunday morning . . .

or what we believe is, in the
end, of little consequence.
The only consequence is what we do"
