What requires valid ID and why shouldn't voting do the same?

The current drama in the United States is the wish to let people vote without providing photo ID. I have to wonder why there is even a discussion on this as you are required to have photo ID for many, many other situations. My thought is that, just maybe, some factions may want people who shouldn't be voting, an opportunity to vote in November and I imagine these people will not be encouraged to vote conservatively. Where is the media on this? Why isn't there more outrage? How would any of us feel to make the trip to the polling place and discover our vote has already been used? I don't mind proving my right to vote. Why would our government, which we support with our taxes, try and do this to law-abiding citizens?

I read that one couldn't get into the Democratic National Convention without photo ID. Aren't they being a little hypocritical given they support the right to vote without and ID?
